During this quiet, nourishing retreat, we will use gentle Chi Kung, Yoga, and Essential Movement to awaken the body as a gateway into an open, spacious mindfulness practice.
Easy-to-understand guidance will help new meditators find ease in their practice, while experienced meditators will find deep support in the carefully held space.
The retreat will include periods of complete silence, as well as contemplative discussions of our individual meditation experience. We find that discussing the specifics of our experience promotes clarity.
Ratna Ling offers balanced, mostly organic, vegetarian meals with vegan and wheat-free options. Shari and Tobin have asked Ratna Ling to create a special menu just for our retreat. This includes protein-centered meals with balanced food combinations.
Somatic therapists Shari Sunshine and Tobin Rangdrol have been teaching meditation, movement, and somatic therapies together for more than 20 years. The harmonious mother-son team facilitates a relaxing, insightful experience.
Shari began practicing meditation when she met the Indian Saint, Ma Yoga Shakti in 1975. This introduction inspired a long worldwide search for a teacher until she met His Holiness the Dalai Lama in 1985. Since then, she has had the opportunity to learn about meditation and listen to teachings from some of the most revered Dharma teachers of our time, including Orgyen Tulku Rinpoche, Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche, Namkai Norbu Rinpoche, Dzongzar Khentse Rinpoche, Tsikey Chokling Rinpoche and Tarthang Tulku Rinpoche. She continues to practice meditation and bodywork and teach Chi Kung, meditation and Mindfulness Through Movement at Ratna Ling Retreat Center in Sonoma County California. Shari is the Director of the Mandala Wellness Center at Ratna Ling. With more than 40 years experience in, meditation, somatic therapies and Traditional Chinese Medicine, Shari is the creator of Syntropy Insight Bodywork.
Tobin’s first memories of meditation are of sitting on his mother Shari’s lap in the quiet of morning. Later, he began the formal study and practice Buddhism in the Theravada tradition in 1992, traveling to Thailand to meditate and receive instruction at Wat Pa Nanachat. From there, he traveled to Nepal and began the study of Dzogchen Buddhism with Chogyal Namkai Norbu and Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche. He studied Tibetan Buddhist Philosophy at the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives with Geshe Sonam and Ruth Sonam, and listened to the Lam Rim, Stages of the Path instructions with His Holiness the Dalai Lama for three seasons. Between periods of travel abroad, he studied Philosophy at Portland State University and Early Childhood Education at the Naropa Institute, a Buddhist university in the Shambhala tradition established by Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche. Tobin is now a dedicated student of Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche. He founded the Arcata School of Massage, and is the creator of Middleway Method Somatic Education and The Free Buddhism Project.
